At Mwamko Mpya Shanzu Community Based Organization (CBO), we are committed to building a stronger and self-reliant community in Shanzu, Mombasa. One of our key economic activities is vegetable farming, a sustainable project that supports food security, nutrition, and income generation for our members.
Why We Chose Vegetable Farming in Shanzu
Agriculture remains one of the most reliable sources of livelihood in Kenya. By engaging in community farming in Shanzu, we are ensuring that families not only have access to affordable, fresh produce but also enjoy economic empowerment. Vegetable farming has become the foundation of our vision to uplift households while promoting healthy living.
What We Grow
Our farms are cultivated with highly nutritious and marketable vegetables:
1. Mchicha (Amaranth) – A fast-growing African vegetable rich in vitamins and minerals.
2. Mkunde (Cowpea leaves) – A traditional delicacy packed with iron, protein, and other nutrients.
3. Tomatoes – Among the most consumed vegetables in Kenya, ensuring a stable market for our farmers.
By focusing on these vegetables, we are meeting local demand while encouraging healthier eating in Mombasa.
The Benefits to Our Community
Through our vegetable farming project in Mombasa, we have achieved:
1. Economic empowerment – Members generate income from the sale of vegetables.
2. Improved nutrition – Families enjoy fresh, chemical-free produce directly from our farms.
3. Community unity – Working on shared farming projects has strengthened cooperation and teamwork among members.
Our Future Plans
Looking ahead, we aim to expand our farming activities by adopting modern farming methods, increasing production capacity, and tapping into larger markets. Our vision is to become a model of sustainable community farming in Kenya while inspiring other groups to follow this path.
At Mwamko Mpya Shanzu CBO, we are not just growing vegetables like mchicha, mkunde, and tomatoes—we are growing health, opportunity, and hope for the future.
