From Pendua to the World: How Ajira Digital Training Is Transforming Youth in Shanzu Ward
In the heart of Pendua, Shanzu Ward, a quiet digital revolution has begun. Powered by Shanzu Mwamko Mpya CBO, young people from the local community are discovering that the internet holds more than just entertainment—it holds opportunity.
Recently, the organization hosted a week-long Ajira Digital Youth Empowerment Training, bringing together dozens of enthusiastic youth with one shared goal: to learn how to earn a living online.
For many participants, this was their first interaction with concepts like freelancing, digital marketing, and remote work platforms. Trainers guided them through creating professional profiles on platforms such as Fiverr, Upwork, and TranscribeMe, while also introducing them to crucial soft skills like communication, digital etiquette, and time management.
"I used to think online jobs were for people in Nairobi or with degrees," said Amina, a 22-year-old resident of Pendua. "Now I have a profile, I’ve learned how to pitch, and I’m ready to start."

In areas like Pendua, where youth unemployment is high and job opportunities are limited, access to digital skills can be life-changing. The Ajira training didn't just teach
practical skills—it gave hope.
Shanzu Mwamko Mpya CBO understands that empowerment is not a one-time event. It's a process. By introducing digital work, the organization is giving youth a pathway out of poverty, a reason to believe in themselves, and the tools to contribute meaningfully to the global economy—all from their local community.
The impact of the program won’t stop with the final session. Many trainees have already begun applying for jobs and networking with others they met during the sessions. The CBO is planning to set up a digital resource hub to provide continued access to internet, mentorship, and upskilling.
"We want these young people to go from learners to earners, and eventually to trainers who can uplift others," said a representative from Shanzu Mwamko Mpya CBO.
This initiative is part of a larger vision: a digitally empowered Shanzu where every young person has a chance to thrive. From Pendua, these digital journeys will ripple out—improving households, uplifting neighborhoods, and ultimately transforming the community.
